2021: HORIZON EUROPE GIVES SUSTAINABILITY AN EXTRA BOOST

What is Horizon Europe?

Horizon Europe is the largest transnational program ever supporting research and innovation. It is the continuation of Horizon 2020 which took place from 2014 to 2020, which was the biggest EU Research and Innovation program with nearly 80 billion euros raised in 7 years.

Horizon Europe is a seven-year program (2021 - 2027) with a general objective to deliver scientific, technological, economic and societal impact from the Union’s investments in research and innovation and a proposed budget of €100 billion in seven years. The European Union’s impact assessment states that Horizon Europe has the potential to deliver up to €11 billion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), potentially creating 320 000 new highly skilled jobs by 2040.

The three pillars of Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe has 3 major goals.

Its first goal is to fund fellowships, distribute research and manage investments in research infrastructures. It supports the projects designed by researchers through the European Research Council (Excellence science).

Its second priority is to reinforce the technological and industrial capacities of the member states and to support research into societal challenges (Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness).

Last, and key, it aims at supporting market-creating innovation and growth through the EU Innovation Council.

What changes versus Horizon 2020?

Horizon Europe will keep the focus on fellowships and help boost science research through the EU Research Council (ERC). It has added new objectives and features such as:

  • Maximising innovation potential across the EU: Support and financial boost will be provided to all EU member states to optimise their national research efforts and increase their innovation potential, especially those in need.

  • Providing access to data

One of the key features of Horizon Europe is the “modus operandi” which grants access to publications and data, and which should increase the innovation potential of results generated by EU funding.

Why is Horizon Europe the key to a sustainable future?

Horizon Europe is a program that grants and extends access to research and innovation broader than ever. With impressive funding and institutions dedicated to science and “future developments “, it will have a major impact on European society. Transformations such as energy consumption, technology, digitalisation and mind changes are part of the long term results of this innovative and sustainable future changing program.
